"I'm his mother. I shouldn't have to ask permission to visit my own son."
That's what Donna, 58, told her daughter-in-law Megan, 29, after letting herself into Megan and her husband Carl's home, uninvited, unannounced, and very much unwelcome.
Megan and Carl, 31, have been married for three years. By Megan's account, Donna has always pushed boundaries, dropping by without warning, rearranging the kitchen because apparently Megan does everything wrong, and making pointed little digs about how Carl was never any trouble before he got married. Megan had been quietly letting it slide to keep the peace.
Then last weekend, everything escalated. Carl had given Donna a spare key without telling Megan. While Megan was out, Donna used it, and went to town. She cleared out the fridge, binning anything she deemed unhealthy. She reorganised the couple's bedroom because she thought it looked "depressing." And, perhaps most jaw-dropping of all, she invited her own friends round to the house for an afternoon tea.
When Megan got home to find strangers in her living room and half her groceries in the bin, she confronted Donna. That's when Donna delivered the line above, seemingly baffled that anyone could have a problem with any of it.
Megan told Carl: the key comes back, or she's changing the locks. Carl thinks she's overreacting and says he only gave his mum the key to make her feel included. Now the wider family have piled in, calling Megan controlling and disrespectful. Donna, apparently, has been tearfully telling everyone that Megan is trying to tear her away from her son.
Megan is clear, she has no issue with Donna visiting. She just doesn't want someone treating her home like an annex of their own.
