Karen, 44, had been looking forward to a catch-up brunch with her friend Jade, 35. They'd barely ordered when Jade's husband Marcus, 33, started ringing repeatedly, increasingly frantic about their nine-month-old daughter having a nappy blowout while he was out at the shops.

Turns out Marcus had grabbed the nursery bag by mistake, different colour, different label, completely empty, rather than the home nappy bag. Jade hadn't even known he was taking the baby out. But none of that mattered to Marcus. On a phone call he didn't realise was on loudspeaker through the car, he tore into Jade, calling her stupid and blaming her for the whole mess.

They cancelled their orders and drove to the house. When they arrived, Marcus was standing in the driveway next to the car with the baby still buckled in her seat, on his phone to a mate, complaining that Jade had 'stitched him up' and that once the car seat was cleaned, he was off to watch the football and sending the baby back inside with her mum.

When he finally clocked Karen waiting in the car, he strolled over and apologised, for Jade. Said he'd heard what a brilliant mum Karen was and that she'd never do something so daft to her husband.

Karen had hit her limit. She told him straight: the reason today would never happen in her house is that the moment her ex-husband showed even half that level of incompetence with zero desire to improve, she walked. She's been divorced over ten years, thriving, and only responsible for raising one actual child, not two.

Marcus told her where to go and drove off to the football.

Karen told Jade what happened. Jade was upset, but Karen doesn't think it was directed at her. They ended up taking the baby back to Karen's, where her own teenager looked after the little one while the two women decompressed in front of a film. Jade said she'd 'figure it out.'

Karen wonders now whether she made things harder for her friend by saying what she said, even if every word of it was true.

Was she out of line, or was someone finally saying what needed to be said? Drop your verdict below.
